Modeling Earth: PLATE TECTONICS
I created a model of the 3 types of boundaries (divergent, convergent and transform) using paper, tape, scissors and cut drinking straws. The model helped the students to visualize the plate movement and boundaries and also the effects of this movement to continental and oceanic crust. The blue paper represents oceanic crust and the green paper represents continental crust. It took 4 class periods, 40 minutes in duration, to complete the foldable. However, the goal of the lesson was met, the students understood how plates move at boundaries and the effects caused by the movement.
Lynelle,
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent lesson. I love the idea of using blue paper for oceanic crust and green paper for continental crust. The diagrams that students create would be great study tools or for display. You could even have students create them with the answers hidden and then they could swap with another student to study.

Jennifer,
DeleteI have never considered hiding answers under the flaps then sharing then to study. Thanks for the idea. Lynelle
Hello,
ReplyDeleteIs there anything that you might change about the lesson to make it shorter in duration, or do you think that this much time will always be required? Regardless, I am glad to hear that the students understood the concepts presented. Amy :)
Amy,
DeleteTo shorten the lesson, I could pre cut all of the paper for the students. This seemed to take the most time.I could have students help during a period called G-LOT, where some students are chosen run errands or help in Guidance, Library, Office or for Teachers.
I commend your wonderful project! I like that all 3 are on the same paper. The students really look like they are enjoying the assignment.
