Confirmation Inquiry..REASON for SEASONS

This student is tilting the Earth towards the sun, noticing that there is more direct sunlight on the Northern Hemisphere causing the season summer.



The student is tilting the Earth away from the sun in the Northern Hemisphere. He noticed that the amount of direct sunlight is less, causing the season to be winter.

This student is trying to focus a telescope to view objects that are past the school football field


The pictures above demonstrate how a Styrofoam ball and a skewer (Earth on its axis) and a lamp (Sun), create a model for students showing how the tilt of the Earth and the amount of direct sunlight is responsible for the change in seasons. The use of this type of model, allows students to grasp a concept that is too large to observe directly. The picture of a student trying to correctly use the science tool, a telescope, provides an opportunity for students to have a real world application of astronomy. This confirmation inquiry positively impacted the students because they used these tools to confirm a concept through an activity when the results were known in advance.
